Experiment
Aim:
To prepare and submit sulphanilic acid from aniline.
Requirements:
Aniline, conc. sulphuric acid, round bottom flask, glass rod, beaker.
Reaction Involved:
Theory:
Sulphanilic acid is formed by reacting aniline with conc. sulphuric acid
(by sulphonation process).
Procedure:
1. Add dropwise 15 ml conc. sulphuric acid with constant shaking to 7.5 ml aniline in a
250 ml round bottom flask.
2.Keep the reaction mixture cool by immersing the flask in cold water.
3.Heat the flask in an oil bath at 180-190°C in a fume cupboard for about five hours.
4.Completion of the reaction can be checked by pouring 1 or 2 drops of the reaction
mixture in dilute sodium hydroxide solution (2N) without leaving the solution cloudy.
5.Cool the reaction mixture and pour it into 50 ml ice cold water.Stir the reaction mixture and allow standing for 10 minutes, the crude sulphanilic acid precipitate out.
6.Filter crude sulphanilic acid on the Buchner funnel with suction, wash with cold water and recrystallize with boiling distilled water.
The yield of the crude sulphanilic acid with M.P. 300°C (decomposes) is 8 g.
Calculation:
Theoretical yield =
Practical yield =
% Yield= Practical yield ×100
Theoretical yield
Uses:
Sulphanilic acid is used to form dyes and sulpha drugs.
Results:
The yield of obtained product was found to be gm and percentage yield
was....... % and melting point was found to be ........ °C.
Caution:
Glassware should be clean and dry before being used.
